The
interview is the most important sales position you’ll
ever have. It’s your chance to sell
yourself as a commodity to the celebrity you seek
to assist. It is also your opportunity to find out if
the position is a good fit for you.
Most importantly, be professional, but be
yourself. Be honest about your skills and
capabilities and let your personality shine. The following
tips will help you put your best foot forward.
- Practice. Before
your interview, practice reciting your skills and qualifications
and your responses to potential interview questions.
Practice in front of a mirror or tape yourself to see
how you look and sound to the interviewer.
- Arrive 20 minutes early.
Being late to the interview is an indication that you
are untimely and unreliable.
- Wear a business suit.
First impressions are lasting. Wearing a business suit
shows that you view the position as a professional career.
- Do your homework.
Do as much research as possible about the person with
whom you will interview. This shows that you are resourceful
and thorough.
- Bring a professional style,
leather bound portfolio. Bring extra copies
of your resume, a list of references, any writing samples
you may have, and a note pad and pen to take notes.
Taking notes shows that you are detailed-oriented (an
essential must-have quality for the "indispensable"
personal assistant).
- Be prepared to ask questions.
Asking questions shows that you are interested in the
position and want to see if it is a good fit for you.
Create a list of intelligent questions and include them
in your portfolio.
- Listen, listen, listen.
A friend used to say “you listen with your mouth
closed”. Listening intently to the information
being shared with you will minimize your follow-up questions
and will also give an indication of how well you listen.
- Say “Thank You”.
At the conclusion of the interview, thank the person
for his or her time. Afterwards, send a handwritten
thank you note to each person with whom you interviewed.
Good luck!!
